__________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract The development of melanonychia is one of the adverse effects of the antiretroviral drug zidovudine. We evaluated 19 adult patients treated with zidovudine and showing nail lines, an unusual side effect sometimes reported. Liver, kidney and pancreas function, as the metabolic function of these patients were also evaluated. Immunological markers and the treatment ́s adherence rate were also obtained. Our results suggest that melanonychia, as macrocytosis, may be associated with the use of antiretroviral therapy.
